Top 5 Kitchen Island Considerations – Don’t Let Your Dream Become a Nightmare
by: Pete Bird
Kitchen islands are hugely popular, and it’s easy to understand why. They create a natural hub for cooking, chatting and everyday life.
When they are designed well, they can make the whole kitchen flow better. But when they’re put in without the right consideration, that dream kitchen can become a bit of a nightmare.
If you’re considering a new kitchen island, here are the top 5 points we always cover before we start on the design.
1) Make sure you can actually move around it
The number one factor when it comes to kitchen islands is clearance. You need enough space around the island for people to pass comfortably, and for doors and drawers to open without clashing with stools, radiators or nearby cabinetry.

For any new room design, we always look at how you function in it day to day. For example, do two people cook at once, do you have kids running around, or is this a social space where guests gather? Those answers affect the island size as much as the room measurements do. A slightly smaller island with great circulation is always better than a big island that blocks the flow.
2) Hob or sink on the island? Check what’s possible first

This is where working with a kitchen retailer who also handles installation really pays off. Your dream layout needs to work in the real world.
If you’re thinking about a hob on the island, it will need powering and extraction. That means planning electrics properly and making sure the positioning works with the layout and safety clearances.
A sink on the island can be very handy for prep and for facing the room while you work. But it does require a fair bit of plumbing. We always assess whether routing water and waste is practical in your particular property before finalising a design. Sometimes it’s straightforward, sometimes it’s possible but involves extra work, and occasionally it’s just not the right solution for the space.
The key here is to make sure you don’t fall in love with a layout until you’ve checked the services first. We can only work with what you’ve got.
3) Smart storage can be a game changer
Islands look great, but they’re also incredibly practical, and the best designs put storage exactly where you need it.
A brilliant example is drawers beneath the hob. When you’re cooking, having pans, utensils, oils and spices right underneath means you’ve got everything you need to hand. It makes the island feel like a proper working station, not just a big surface in the middle.
4) Overlapping worktops for breakfast bar seating
One of the most popular island trends right now is the overhanging work surface that creates a breakfast bar effect. This is an easy win. It adds casual seating without needing a separate table, and it turns cooking into something sociable.
It also changes how the island feels in the room. Instead of being a block of cabinetry, it becomes a place to perch with a cuppa, chat with family and friends, or keep the cook company while dinner is on. If you love entertaining (or just want the kitchen to feel more connected), breakfast bar seating is often the feature that makes the island feel like the heart of the home.
5) Durability matters on an island
An island takes a lot of daily wear. From chopping to leaning, spilling, homework and laptops, it takes the brunt of daily processes. This means the choice of materials is an important consideration.
Laminate can be used, but if you want something more robust for an island, we usually recommend stepping up to a tougher surface.
Two options we recommend are:
- Compact laminate, such as the Zenith range, which offers strength and durability with a sleek finish
- 30mm quartz worktops, which bring a premium look and feel, with the thickness adding confidence for an island that’s going to be used heavily
When it comes to the ultimate wishlist, quartz is the way to go. It’s the finish many people have in mind when they picture their dream kitchen island – and for good reason. It looks fantastic, feels solid, and stands up beautifully in a busy home.
The best islands look good and work hard
A great kitchen island is the result of good planning. From determining the right sizing, the right services, storage that supports how you cook, and a worktop that can handle real life, everything needs to be considered if it’s going to be effective.
If you’re looking for a new kitchen island, we can help you design one that suits your space perfectly. And because we handle installation too, we’ll make sure what’s on the plan is achievable, practical and finished to a high standard.
